Roofing and Protection
Living on the prairie means beautiful open skies and, now and then, serious weather. Spring storms can bring strong winds, hail and heavy rain. A little preparation can protect your home and your peace of mind.
Check your roof first
Your roof takes the brunt of every storm. Look for missing, lifted or cracked shingles and damaged flashing. If your roof is aging, upgrading to impact-resistant materials can add strong protection against hail and wind.
The best time to fix a roof is before the storm, not during it.
Strengthen windows and doors
Well-sealed, sturdy windows and doors keep wind and rain out. Replace cracked panes, repair worn weatherstripping and make sure latches work properly.
Look after your yard
- Trim branches that hang over the roof or power lines.
- Secure outdoor furniture and grills before storms arrive.
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear so water can drain away.
Prepare your family
Know where your safest shelter is, keep a flashlight and emergency kit handy and make sure everyone knows the plan. Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are important during power outages, too.
Review your coverage
Take a moment to confirm that your home and mortgage insurance matches your needs. Photograph your belongings and keep records somewhere safe.
